Two years ago today an EF5 tornado touched down in Moore, OK. leaving 23 dead and over 370 injured. There were at least 1,000 homes destroyed, and an estimated $2 billion in damages. Entire subdivisions were razed as the storm touched down for an agonizing 39 minutes. Unbelievably, Moore has been hit by at least five tornadoes in the last five years. The most recent being on March 26, 2015 and the deadliest being on May 3, 1999, which killed 36 and injured 583.
Yesterday, powerful storms swept through the Southern Plains spawning more than two dozen reported tornadoes and dropping historical amounts of rain. One death has been reported in Oklahoma due to the resulting flooding and several other states are experiencing rising waters as well. Folks in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas are dealing with waterlogged roadways, highway closures, rising rivers and even evacuations in some areas.
According to the Weather Channel, many cities have already reached (or exceeded) the top five wettest May in their weather records. Regrettably, it appears that the weather pattern responsible for the monsoon-esque conditions lately will stay in place through Memorial Day weekend, bringing more rain and thunderstorms to, well- pretty much everywhere…
