Activity in the Atlantic!

By June 20, 2017February 3rd, 2020No Comments

It’s only June 20th and we’ve already got our second and soon to be named third storms!

Tropical storm Bret formed Monday afternoon with top sustained winds of 40 mph. Trinidad and Venezuela will feel some effects from Bret, but it is unlikely to intensify further. The NHC forecast calls for the system to disperse tomorrow.

The bigger concern is a disturbance in the Gulf, which could become a tropical storm by this evening, which would bring us to our third named storm- Cindy.  According to the NHC’s new Potential Tropical Cyclone advisories, this system is dubbed Potential Tropical Cyclone 3 or PTC 3. This new system gives the “NHC  the option to issue advisories, watches, and warnings for disturbances that are not yet a tropical cyclone, but which pose the threat of bringing tropical storm or hurricane conditions to land areas within 48 hours…” You can learn more about the PTC Advisories here Update on National Hurricane Center Products and Services for 2017 .

It’s unlikely the system will reach high intensity, so the main threat from PTC 3 / Cindy will be major rainfall and flooding. Folks along the coast from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana will want to keep a close eye on this one.
