Triple Tropical Threat

By August 17, 2017February 3rd, 2020No Comments

Tropical storm Harvey has formed and may pose a threat early next week to parts of Central America’s Caribbean coast. However, it is unlikely this system will impact the U.S.

In addition, the National Hurricane Center has identified two new areas in the tropical Atlantic that have the potential for tropical storm development. 92L is currently about 1200 miles east of the Leeward Islands and has a 60% chance of cyclone formation over the next 48 hours. This disturbance will likely move through the Bahamas and into the Gulf of Mexico next week. Even if the system doesn’t develop in the short term, there is potential for later development so it bears a close watch. Behind that we’ve got Disturbance 2, which formed yesterday and is currently near the Cabo Verde Islands. The NHC is giving D2 a 30% chance of development in the next five days.

Post Tropical Cyclone Gert has not and will not pose any threat to land.

We see it all season long, but did you ever wonder exactly what an Invest is? Well, Invest is short for an Investigative Area, and the status is assigned by the National Hurricane Center, Central Pacific Hurricane Center and Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Invests are numbered from 90 to 99, followed by “L” in the Atlantic, E and C in the East and Central Pacific respectively, or W in the West Pacific. And now we know 🙂

Lots of action as we come into the peak of hurricane season!
